GROEHRMUEHLGASSE HIGH SCHOOL

The extension to the school building is divided into two different parts: the western wing which is conceived as a continuation of the existing building; and the underground extension of the after-school childcare building, which is distinguished by its free-form structure,  achieving a playful, but at the same time respectful synthesis with the Burkardt Villa. These two areas are consciously contrasted with each other, as different qualities and atmospheres should pervade the after-school childcare and the classrooms. Lots of light and greenery should be conveyed from above through atriums in order to offer a pleasant atmosphere and avoid a basement feeling. The facade design should be made of precast concrete, thus perpetuating the language of the existing structure in its materiality.
