Competition Primary School Pirquetgasse (Vienna, 2013, with F+P Architekten ZT GMBH)

The surroundings of this plot are characterised by an inhomogeneous landscape of buildings with abruptly varying heights. The central idea of the design is therefore to establish human scale: The school is kept on two levels - choosing not to exploit the maximum permitted height of the construction class. The building is laid out on the plot as a branch with leaves, and it orients itself towards the light. Through the placement of the classrooms, arranged along a curved main axis, the amount of light coming in is not restricted by the residential high-rises in the east. This configuration also provides the basis for the open space concept, where thematically different courtyards are ranged around a central garden. The main garden invites the children to play, ride and swing.
