Competition Vienna West Highschool, Steinbruchstraße (Vienna, 2014 - 2018, 1st Prize with F+P ARCHITEKTEN ZT GMBH)

The AHS Wien West is based on two central design ideas: First, the respectful handling and upgrading of the listed existing buildings of the area. A reinterpretation of the originally given urban symmetric situation into a translation of school into a contemporary formal language. Second: The creation of a modern, communicative school with the aim of uniting interior and exterior space and to banish the dividing element from school construction. Decisive for the pedagogical concept of the AHS Wien West is the spacious inner courtyard, which forms the centre of the new building part terraced inwards. All communicative areas such as open learning zones, home bases, dining rooms, etc., which are connected to each other via directly assigned open spaces, are arranged around it. This integrative open space concept creates a high degree of communication between pupils of all ages and forms the heart of the school community. The quieter classrooms provide a contrast to the outside area. The two wings of the new building directly adjoin the central corridor of the former crew building and expand it into a clear development system that allows intuitive orientation within the building and creates an overall project. This was made possible by re-locating the main entrance to the centre, which significantly upgrades the crew building.
